Annual family photos intentionally document your family as it changes. They capture how much the kids have grown, their personalities at this age, and the way siblings interact. You can look back and see the way your toddler still reached for your hand. Best of all, Mom and Dad get to be part of the story instead of always being the ones behind the phone. When you see your family every day, it’s easy to miss how quickly things change. Then you compare this year’s family photos to last year’s and suddenly see it: your oldest is taller, your toddler has lost some of their baby features, or the siblings who barely interacted last year are now inseparable.

When Is the Best Time to Take Family Photos in Houston?
There isn’t one perfect time of year for family photos. The best time is whenever it makes sense for your family. Fall is especially popular because it provides a natural opportunity to update your portraits before the holidays. You can create photographs to display in your home year-round while also getting the perfect image for your Christmas cards.
But annual photos do not need to look the same every year. You might choose a Petite Portrait or Signature Session when you want more time and variety, take advantage of a limited fall mini when a shorter update is the right fit, or schedule extended family photos while everyone is home for the holidays.
The important part is simply making the time to document your family as it is right now.
Houston Family Photos & Christmas Photo Shoots
If the annual Christmas card is what reminds you to schedule family photos every year, that’s a pretty great reminder. But your photographs don’t stop being valuable when the Christmas decorations come down. These sessions are so much more than a Christmas card!
The images from your session may end up in frames and albums, on grandparents’ desks or tucked into memory boxes. One year’s Christmas card photo eventually becomes five or ten years of watching your children grow. So while Christmas photo shoots are a wonderful way to update your Christmas photos in Houston, the card itself is almost a bonus. The real value is having the photograph at all.
Choosing the Right Houston Family Photography Session
Making family photography an annual tradition doesn’t mean you need to invest in the same type of session every year.
Different seasons and different families need different things. It’s not always one-size-fits-all, which is why I offer various packages to accommodate my clients.
Do You Need a Full Family Photography Session Every Year?
Not necessarily. If you simply want updated family photos and a beautiful Christmas card image, a mini session may be all you need.
If you want more variety, multiple groupings or time to focus on your family’s personalities and connections, a Petite Portrait or Signature Session may be a better fit.
Are Family Mini Sessions Worth It?
A 10- or 15-minute mini session may be short, but you aren’t simply paying me to take pictures for 15 minutes.
You’re receiving the same artistic eye, professional experience, equipment, understanding of light and location, posing and prompting, and finished editing that goes into a longer session. The only difference is it’s condensed into a shorter experience with a smaller final gallery.
That makes minis an economical and convenient way for families to enjoy professional Houston family photography year after year.
Are Mini Sessions Good for Families With Young Children?
They can be! Some children thrive with the quick pace of a mini session.
Others need more time to warm up to a new person or environment. If your child tends to be shy or does better without feeling rushed, a Petite Portrait or Signature Session may give your family the breathing room you need.
There’s no universally “right” session. The best choice is the one that works for your family this year.
The Best Time to Book Extended Family Photos Houston
There’s one scenario where I think the holidays may be the best time for booking family photos. Thanksgiving and Christmas may be some of the only times grandparents, adult children, siblings and cousins are all in the same place. As families grow, coordinating everyone becomes increasingly difficult. If everyone is already coming home for the holidays, it can be the perfect opportunity to schedule an extended family session and document multiple generations together.
